The “Sustainable Art” competition for students organised in a collaboration between Arkın University of Creative Arts and Design (ARUCAD) and BOCCHI, a leading company in the bathroom and kitchen products industry with 70 years of experience, has concluded. The ceremony took place at the ARUCAD Art Gallery, where the winners received their awards, and the artworks of participating students were exhibited.
Within the framework of the competition organised in the collaboration between ARUCAD and BOCCHI, industrial kitchen and bathroom sinks produced by BOCCHI but damaged or broken for various reasons were given a new artistic life through the creative efforts of ARUCAD students. The competition, named “From Broken to Beautiful,” aimed to raise awareness about the importance of the “Zero Waste” goal through the recycling and reevaluation of materials in artistic creations, providing ARUCAD students with the opportunity to closely experience the ceramic industry. At the opening of the exhibition, showcasing the results of the extensive and dedicated preparation process, an award ceremony announcing the winners was held.
The jury of the competition included Akgün Seçkiner, President of BOCCHI USA, artist Emin Çizenel, Vice Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Dalkılıç, Head of the Plastic Arts Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raif Dimililer, Industrial Design Department faculty member, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martina Callegaro and Textile and Fashion Design Department faculty member, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Plümer Bardak, who evaluated the works of the students. As a result of the jury evaluation, cash prizes and certificates of achievement were presented to the winners of the competition. The first prize went to Nina Nazarova, a third-year student in the Plastic Arts Department, the second prize to Alika Onarova, a second-year student in the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department, and the third prize to Sevgi Songur, a fourth-year student in the Plastic Arts Department. The first, second, and third winners received cash prizes of $1000, $750, and $500, respectively. Additionally, the winning artworks will be exhibited at the prestigious KBIS Trade Fair in Las Vegas in 2024, providing an opportunity for ARUCAD students to showcase their work to a wider audience. The proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to three separate non-profit organisations operating in the United States, Turkey, and internationally to support sustainability and meaningful projects worldwide.
During the exhibition opening, ARUCAD Corporate Communication Coordinator, Gizem Kaya emphasised the importance of collaboration. She stated that ARUCAD aims to produce individuals committed to ethical values, community service, and environmental awareness since its establishment. Kaya expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the successful completion of the competition and thanked Erbil Arkın, the founder of the university, Akgün Seçkiner, President of BOCCHI USA, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinan Arkın, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Asım Vehbi, the Rector, Tahir Pirgalıoğlu, and Selen Bedük, as well as all the jury members.
Afterwards, Selen Bedük, Marketing Manager of BOCCHI USA, spoke, expressing excitement and pride in collaborating with ARUCAD for the Sustainable Art Competition. She acknowledged the transformative power of creative ideas that shape our daily lives and thanked ARUCAD for their commitment to nurturing art and providing a platform for innovative expressions.
After expressing gratitude to the students and everyone involved in the collaboration, Akgün Seçkiner, President of BOCCHI USA, emphasised the necessity of sustainability and environmental awareness for corporate and large companies in today’s world. He expressed pride in leading this collaboration with ARUCAD on behalf of BOCCHI and highlighted the importance of bringing together sustainability and art through such initiatives.
Erbil Arkın, Founder of ARUCAD, addressed the participating students, thanking them for their collaboration and encouraging them to continue working and producing. He underlined the significance of the talents of these students for the island and urged them not to forget the institution when they become famous.
After the speeches, certificates of appreciation were presented to the jury members by Rector, Prof. Dr. Asım Vehbi, and the evening concluded with a cocktail attended by the ARUCAD family.
