Arkin University of Creative Arts and Design (ARUCAD) organized an in-house training seminar titled “Don’t Be a Barrier, Be Aware” on March 13, 2025, to raise awareness at an institutional level and strengthen social inclusion. The seminar, held in the university’s Conference Hall, was attended by academic and administrative staff.
The training was conducted by Dr. Aslı Önay Akçay, a Turkish Sign Language Instructor and Interpreter, who emphasized the importance of accessibility and inclusivity. Participants were introduced to effective communication methods with individuals with disabilities and learned key considerations for fostering inclusive interactions. The seminar also provided insights into the Deaf community and culture while introducing the grammar structure and basic signs of Turkish Sign Language (TİD).
During the session, participants learned fundamental concepts of sign language, exploring ways to communicate more effectively with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in daily life. Practical exercises were incorporated to reinforce their learning, highlighting that sign language is not just a means of communication but also represents a culture and identity.
At the end of the seminar, ARUCAD Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Burcu Toker presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Aslı Önay Akçay. Reaffirming the university’s commitment to social responsibility initiatives, Toker stated that ARUCAD would continue to support similar events promoting accessibility and inclusivity in the future.
