Organized by the ARUCAD New Media Department, the seminar titled “The Role of Press and Freedom of Expression in a Democratic Society” addressed freedom of expression and press freedom from a legal perspective, emphasizing their fundamental role in democratic societies. Delivered by lawyer Cansu Nazlı, the seminar explored the constitutional foundations of these rights within the context of TRNC law, as well as the conditions under which they are protected or limited.
The seminar highlighted that freedom of expression extends beyond speech, encompassing a wide range of forms such as written and visual communication, artistic production, media publishing, and social media content. It also emphasized that press freedom is not limited to journalism alone, but plays a crucial role in the public’s right to access information and in the formation of public opinion.
A key focus of the seminar was the balance between freedom of expression and other fundamental rights, including privacy, personal reputation, and public interest. Topics such as criticism of public figures, media ethics, legal responsibilities, and the potential chilling effect of criminal penalties on expression were discussed through current and concrete examples.
The seminar provided students with a clearer understanding of how legal and ethical considerations intersect with media production, artistic expression, and everyday communication practices. It also encouraged students to critically evaluate how laws and regulations can influence public discourse, potentially leading to self-censorship in certain contexts.
Overall, the seminar emphasized that freedom of expression and press freedom are not only individual rights, but also essential components of a society’s ability to question, critique, and access information. The event offered students a comprehensive perspective on the relationship between law, media, and democracy, while strengthening their critical thinking and media literacy skills.
