“The Journey of Paper” Seminar Held at ARUCAD

Organized as part of the 10th anniversary events of the Cyprus Paper Artists Association (KKSD), “The Journey of Paper” seminar was hosted by Arkin University of Creative Arts and Design (ARUCAD) with the contribution of the Cultural Department of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In the opening speech, Cyprus Paper Artists Association Chairperson İsmet Tatar emphasized the progress made in the development and visibility of paper art in Cyprus over the past ten years, underlining the importance of sharing art and encouraging production. Following her remarks, a short promotional film about KKSD was screened. The first speaker of the seminar, Dr. Öznur Özden, delivered a presentation titled “The Chemistry of Paper”, sharing technically and artistically engaging insights into paper types, production processes, fiber structures, and chemical transformations. Subsequently, Aytekin Vural, Director of the İbrahim Müteferrika Paper Museum, gave a presentation titled “The Journey of Paper in Turkey and the İbrahim Müteferrika Paper Museum.” Vural spoke about the historical development of paper production in Turkey, the pioneering contributions of İbrahim Müteferrika to the printing press and cultural heritage, and rare works featured in the museum’s collection. He also highlighted the museum’s sustainability-oriented projects and emphasized the importance of fostering appreciation for paper among younger generations. Both presentations offered comprehensive insights into the historical, chemical, and cultural journey of paper. Participants listened with great interest as speakers described paper not only as a production material but also as an artistic object carrying cultural memory, and they had the opportunity to examine various paper samples. At the end of the program, ARUCAD Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Burcu Toker expressed her gratitude to the Chairperson of KKSD and the speakers, emphasizing the significance of hosting such valuable discussions on the journey of paper at ARUCAD. The seminar concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation. “The Journey of Paper” seminar, which explored the story of paper from past to present through the lenses of science and art, took place at the ARUCAD Conference Hall.
