Organized by the Visual Communication Design Department of Arkın University of Creative Arts and Design (ARUCAD), the seminar titled “Media and the Limits of Freedom of Expression” was held on April 10, 2025, at the Conference Hall. As part of the course, the event hosted lawyer and human rights activist Mine Atlı, with the seminar moderated by the course instructor Asst. Prof. Dr. Huri Yontucu.
In her talk, Mine Atlı emphasized that freedom of expression protects not only popular views but also opinions that may be disturbing, offensive, or contrary. She shared examples from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decisions and explained that restrictions on freedom of expression must be evaluated according to the "Three-Part Test": legality, legitimate aim, and necessity in a democratic society.
The seminar also discussed the balance between freedom of expression and personal rights, using the cartoon case from Northern Cyprus as an example. It was emphasized that both media professionals and citizens must uphold their rights to freedom of expression while also considering their social responsibilities.
The seminar proved to be highly enlightening and thought-provoking for students.
