The seminar Meaning and Narrative in Musical Improvisation, organized by the Sound Arts Design Department at Arkin University of Creative Arts and Design (ARUCAD), was held at BA SINO3 with bass player and composer Cahit Kutrafalı and moderated by Sen. Ins. Melisa Tunay Kula.
The seminar approached musical improvisation not only as a form of spontaneous performance, but also as a creative field through which meaning and narrative can be constructed. Through discussions on spontaneity, expression and structure, the session explored how emotional and conceptual stories can be formed through sound, as well as the relationship between improvisation, composition and musical decision-making.
Drawing from his artistic practice, Cahit Kutrafalı focused on the narrative potential of improvisation and shared reflections on the ways musical language can generate thought, communicate ideas and shape audience perception. As part of the seminar, students also had the opportunity to experience improvisational processes not only theoretically but through practical exercises and live musical experimentation.
Enriched through interactive discussion and a Q&A session, the event offered participants a space to reflect on the relationship between improvisation, composition and narrative from multiple perspectives, creating a critical and experiential platform for thinking about musical creation.
