ARTS 101- HISTORY OF ART I
History of Art I is a fundamental course following the tracks of the artistic development from prehistorical era to 19th Century in chronological order.

The aim of the course is comparisons works of art from includes various inter-period in terms political construct, economic-technological developments, and religion.

ARTS 121- BASIC ART I
Basic art education; aims for plastic values to be understood, experienced, and to create an awareness in design based on the basic elements and principles of design.

Compositions with two-dimensional shaping and the perception of using basic design elements and principles are developed. In addition, the basic elements and principles of three-dimensional design such as space (location), size, colour, light, movement, and surface are analysed with workshops and research.

PHVD 101- HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
This course is a chronological survey of the aesthetic, historical and technical development of still photography as a major medium of artistic expression from its invention in the early 19th century to its present prominence in contemporary art.

The survey of photography, from its origins to present day, will be presented via the use of selected images, and video presentations. Photographers, and the ideas and meanings behind the photographs they created will be analyzed via lectures, class discussions and presentations, writing exercises, and study handouts from required readings. Photography’s role as an artistic medium will be the central focus, as well as its broader function in our visual, political, and social/pop culture.

PHVD 111- BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY I
This course will give a comprehensive overview of the basic tools that concern both analog and digital photography. Through lectures and demo in the photo studio, students will have the opportunity to personally experience the creative potential of photography and the languages linked to it. Assignments will include topics such as depth of field, shutter speed, digital color management. Students will learn how to correctly expose.

SOFL 101- ACADEMIC ENGLISH I
Students who regularly attend this course will have the opportunity to practice a variety of study skills, including but not limited to setting goals, organizing, using time, concentrating, and taking notes. Students will be given important articles written in modern-day English and students will learn to discuss and write responses at an academic level. At the end of the lessons, each student will be able to derive the meaning of unknown words in a reading text, write paragraphs and articles, summarize, discuss and write reply letters.

ARTS 102- HISTORY OF ART II
This course provides the idea of Modern world to modernity, to rationalisation and transformation, to the condition of history as of re-articulating the question of conditions of creative processes. The aim of this course is to introduce students to Modern Art and its many definitions and criticisms while outlining a number of movements and styles associated at the midst of contemporary approaches focusing on how artists of the twentieth century developed a cultural and historical dialogue with what we refer to as ‘modernism’ and ‘modernity.’

ARTS 122- BASIC ART II
Basic art education aims for plastic values to be comprehended and experienced at the application level. The syllabus which includes theory and technical information regarding colour and material use educates the student about field experience before moving on to the production stage. Students learn all concepts of basic art which are colour, form, and composition through application. 

PHVD 102- CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN PHOTOGRAPHY
This course is a survey of the history of photography from its prehistory to the present.

Course readings, lectures, and demonstrations will address photography’s multiple histories: as artistic medium, as social text, as technological adventure, and as cultural practice. We will view images made by important contributors to photography’s histories, as well as images that are important less for who made them than for their power within the discourses of mass culture. We will also learn about various technical processes in their creative and historical contexts and about the camera’s evolution, and become familiar with the vocabulary and the issues of photographic theory and criticism.

PHVD 112- BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY II
This course is intended to have more advanced technical skills after Basic Photography I class. This course is based on the development of knowledge and skills in photography editing. Besides the settings such as colour, tone and contrast, filtering and effect techniques will also be taught.

SOFL 102- ACADEMIC ENGLISH II
It is a continuation of the Academic English I course. Students who regularly attend this course will have the opportunity to practice many study skills, including but not limited to setting goals, organizing, using time, concentrating, and taking notes. Students will be given important articles written in contemporary English, and students will learn to discuss and write responses at an academic level. At the end of the lessons, each student will be able to understand the meaning of unknown words in a reading passage and write paragraphs and articles.

ARTS 201- RESEARCH METHODS IN ART
This course is a foundation for exploring different methods for undertaking research in art.  Students will learn core skills in critical reading and writing, such as identifying and evaluating primary and secondary sources, compiling a bibliography/ referencing as well as practice applying these skills to different theoretical frameworks, critical methodologies and key concepts used in the interpretation, display and analysis of art.

PHVD 221- STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY I
This course combines a technical framework taught through lectures and hands-on workshops that allow you to create images and receive useful criticism. Your training will focus on studio photography and this class will allow you to learn a wide range of photographic studio situations including glassware, reflective/ metal ware, working with layouts, portrait, fashion, still-lives and using lighting simply. All assignments will help you to learn technical skills used in the studio but also, the ability to take this gained knowledge and apply them to other areas of photography.

PHVD 251- IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES I
This course introduces students to the Raster image editing techniques. Throughout the course students will learn how to manipulate photographic images. Students will find the opportunity to edit their own shootings and perform professional touch-up techniques. Gaining skills for editing digital photography, colour correction, advanced touch-up, and creating basic digital collages are the main objectives of this course.

PHVD 241- VIDEO THEORY AND PRACTICE
This course is designed to give an overview of the medium of video, not only as a motion picture recording format but as an individual medium with its certain aesthetics and meaning. Within the last decades, video has evolved from being a cheap technology to the entire domination of motion pictures art and industry to the point that our daily routine couldn’t be imagined without this medium. Therefore, this course is packed with theoretical and practical materials that will enable students to understand and use the video format in the most effective way.

AITT/HIST 201- ATATURK’S PRINCIPLES AND HISTORY OF REVOLUTIONS I
Atatürk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution course; telling students how to establish the circumstances under which the Republic of Turkey, forming the government intends to adopt the basic principles of Ataturk. The reason why his principles were transferred to the field of application is explained with case studies that not only the Turkish Nation but also the whole humanity need more than ever.

TUDI/TURK 201- TURKISH LANGUAGE I
The aim of the course is to comprehend the structure and functioning characteristics of the mother tongue to every young person studying in higher education, and to gain the ability to use Turkish correctly and beautifully as a means of written and oral expression in terms of language-thought connection. Another goal is to make a unifying and integrative language prevailing in teaching and to raise young people who have native language awareness.

PHVD 222 STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY II
Advanced study of studio concepts intended to provide students with comprehensive understanding of the still life, portrait, and on-location photography. Advance use of flash in/out doors. Use of electronic strobes, power packs, and mono-lights.  Proper metering techniques for strobe equipment.  Proper care and safety of all studio equipment. Assisting others through assembling, shooting, and disassembling studio sets. Constructing studio equipment. Introduction to on-location photography.  Understanding the design elements of in-studio art. Constructive critique techniques.

PHVD 252- IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES II
This course is intended to teach students more advanced editing techniques. Throughout the course students will learn how to manipulate photographic images. Students will find the opportunity to edit their own shootings and perform professional touch-up techniques. Gaining skills for editing digital photography, colour correction, advanced touch-up, and creating basic digital collages are the main objectives of this course.

PHVD 242- VIDEO EDITING TECHNIQUES
This course serves as an introduction to the art of video post-production. We explore the theory and practice of various editing styles in order to gain a better understanding of how stories are constructed in the editing room. Through demonstrations and hands-on experience, students learn advanced editing techniques with an in-depth examination of Final Cut X. To further enhance projects, students create animated motion graphics using Motion or After Effects. Strong emphasis is placed on post-production techniques that improve the sound and image quality of the videos. Footage is provided for all exercises and projects. However, students are given the option to shoot new material for their final projects if desired.

PHVD 381- PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO PRACTICES I
The course basically deals with learning the methods of producing a creative and solid photographic series or a portfolio. It is open to all kinds of photographic productions including documentary, studio and fictional photography and students will be free to choose from. This course will include but is not limited to, color and/or black and white photography via digital media and/or traditional photography and the students will also be expected to explore different kinds of presentation methods for their works.

PHVD 313 PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
This course will provide insight into contemporary fine art and commercial portrait photography and include application of the principles of design, lighting, composition, posing, and portfolio presentation techniques. Studio lighting and camera techniques are explored for portraiture. Students will use a DSLR camera, as well as a variety of lighting equipment. Additional topics explored include posing, expression, emotion, genre, intended use, make-up, wardrobe, setting and evaluating images.

 

PHVD 382- PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO PRACTICES II
The course mainly covers the same ideas and description of Photography and Video Practices I. The students will continue to develop a photographic series which they’ve begun to produce the previous semester. It is open to all kinds of photographic productions including documentary, studio and fictional photography and students will be free to choose from. This course will include, but is not limited to, color and/or black and white photography via digital media and/or traditional photography and the students will also be expected to explore different kinds of presentation methods for their works.

PHVD 352- VIDEO ART
This class will emphasize video as a fine art medium, rather than merely a vehicle for narrative storytelling. Instead of characters simply acting out a script geared toward conflict and resolution, we will focus on creating works primarily concerned with the formal aspects of digital video. They include such things as the camera and lens, the edit, and the use of light. At the more basic level, these aspects are comprised of such things as the pixel, compression, and frame rate. Students will implement techniques and concepts learned through lectures, screenings, and readings to produce moving works of art. These completed videos may include animation, live-action, graphics, and found footage.

PHVD 481- PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO PRACTICES III
The course mainly covers the same ideas and description of Photography and Video Practices II. The students will continue to develop a photographic series that they’ve begun to produce the previous semester. It is open to all kinds of photographic productions including documentary, studio and fictional photography and students will be free to choose from. This course will include, but is not limited to, color and/or black and white photography via digital media and/or traditional photography and the students will also be expected to explore different kinds of presentation methods for their works.

PHVD 411- PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES
This course will further explore more unique, personal and conceptual approaches. Students will have the opportunity to experiment within each project. A responsible student will become familiar with traditional and digital mediums, the means of creating and delivering art, the history of illustration and design, and the expectations of working as an artist in the field.

PHVD 480- INTERNSHIP
An internship experience provides the student with an opportunity to explore career interests while applying knowledge and skills learned in the classroom in a work setting. The experience also helps students gain a clearer sense of what they still need to learn and provides an opportunity to build professional networks. In this course students will be able to apply their practical skills and reflect on their theoretical knowledge in a professional working environment. They will develop time management skills, practice collaborative working with colleagues in the work place and the ability to carry out tasks as requested and required. They will also reflect on their chosen industry and their performance in a written report.

PHVD 492- GRADUATION PROJECT
This course covers the holistic design process of the final graduation project for photography students from the conceptual stage to the final presentation. It introduces the students to the essential issues that need to be considered in any photographic project. Furthermore, it exposes the students to real time projects and prepares them to negotiate and convince others with the viability of their artistic ideas. On the other hand, it develops the students’ skills in handling such large projects in real life.

PHVD 214- MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY
This course will cover how to capture the world of macro – revealing images often overlooked with the naked eye – in a creative way. The great thing about working at close range is that subjects abound – outside and indoors; you just have to develop a seeing eye for beauty, texture and design. Learn how to choose the right equipment, how to use ambient light – and how to modify it if necessary. With macro, you have complete control of the lighting and this is key to success or failure. There can be no excuses about the lighting being too harsh or not bright enough, because there is always a solution for modifying it.

PHVD 216- EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The course is designed for advanced independent students wishing to add the element of experimentation to their work in photography. This course is designed to expand the student’s photographic vocabulary, encourage experimentation, utilizing a variety of materials and techniques, and push the boundaries of what makes a photograph. In technical terms, the class will be concentrated primarily on the experimentation of alternative techniques and the development of a personal portfolio. Class time will include slide presentations on work by a wide variety of photographers, past and present, to help clarify project goals and possible approaches as well as to inspire students in their own work.

PHVD 218- FICTIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The objective of this course is to question the relationship between photographs and reality. Students learn how to approach a project and develop it in a creative way. They will also experience how the photographs end up in particular contexts by adding many alterations that can be made to the photographic image while shooting or in post-production by using digital software.

PHVD 306- VISUAL CULTURE STUDIES
This course addresses visual culture both as a phenomenon and academic field. Through texts from different disciplines, like media studies, art history, philosophy, sociology, and anthropology, the course investigates problems like why, and how, has the visual come to such an exceptional position in western cultures? What characterizes different visual cultures in different historical epochs? What qualities do we assign to images and what power do they exert on us? How do we value the cultural status of different images? What is visual culture?

PHVD 310- LIGHT AND COLOUR IN PHOTOGRAPHY
This course provides instruction in digital photography, including camera operation, image capture, lighting techniques, and digital workflow. Examination of the functions of light and color, crucial elements in the context of image capture, will be central to the course. Students will gain a heightened sensitivity to color, an awareness of the potential of the medium, and a strong foundation in color theory. The class will discuss the work of contemporary artists who use color as a central element in their creative process.

PHVD 314- FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY
At the core of this course will be the practice of producing a fashion photography shoot. Students will be focusing on bringing together the conceptualizing, preparing, and executing phases needed. Hands-on sessions will cover set design, lighting design, and looking at those 8 elements to make sure they’re all accounted for. Coupled with the practice of producing a shoot is the editing of the images and, maybe most important of all, a debriefing to consider what went right and what needs improving.

PHVD 315- PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY
Instruction in the technical aspects involved in commercial photography. Topics include lighting equipment, techniques of production photography, reproduction principles, illustrative techniques, and advertising. Students will learn how to organize and maintain equipment and materials in a photographic studio and select proper lighting for a variety of photographic studio situations.

PHVD 317- DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
The course teaches students to develop a meaningful relationship with lived experience through documentary photography, a form of visual storytelling that chronicles historical events and/or significant scenes of life.  Through readings as well as hands-on experience, students will be guided to explore the cultural, aesthetic, political, and ethical issues involved in this artistic and journalistic genre.

PHVD 332- LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY
The general goal of the class is to produce photos and text based on an examination of the interactions among human and non-human processes and their effect upon the landscape. The course will consist of photo

shoots/field trips, photography critiques, reading, writing, film viewing and discussion, and technical training. Course content originates from the fields of geography, art history, and photography.

PHVD 344- VIDEO INSTALLATION
Creative production of time-based art using digital video and effects. Emphasis on video concepts, techniques, composition, sequencing of ideas, and narrative as well as non-narrative structures. Introduction to the history of video art as an art form and experimental approaches to video art and performance.

PHVD 361- ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY
This class focuses on architectural photography and the photography of urban space, both in relation to their historical roots and contemporary practice. Cyprus offers a perfect environment to develop one’s artistic talent while learning the art of photography and discovering the secrets of one of the most fascinating cultures in the world.

PHVD 402- CONCEPTS OF ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY
In this course students will learn about photography as a visual art practice, and how this can help them to become an engaging and active photographer. They will explore the work and concepts of contemporary photographic artists, which may trigger a new interest in what they photograph. They will also have the opportunity to explore the critical link between art and photography.

PHVD 413- STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
We explore still life photography from an artistic perspective while using the full range of commercial photography skills. The course covers all aspects of this broad topic, from food to product photography and to artistic still life. You’ll create captivating still life arrangements using a range of materials and material products.

PHVD 472- GRAPHIC DESIGN IN PHOTOGRAPHY
The focus of the Graphic Design in Photography course is to create a balance between design and technology. The course begins with a fundamentals of design, drawing and art appreciation and starts to integrate technology during the semester. Design principles, creative thinking and problem-solving techniques, as they apply to the media arts, give the student a strong foundation for entry into the work force.

PHVD 473- PHOTOBOOK DESIGN
Photobook Design class will examine the current state of photobook and the emergence of new technologies which allows students to create their own unique photographic books. In this class students will design and create their own photobooks.

PHVD 334- VIDEO MAKING (FE)
An introduction to single-camera video production. Through in-class demonstrations, lectures, readings and hands-on projects, this class offers students the opportunity to begin learning, or advance, skills and techniques of HD video field production and post-production. Students work on their own projects (individually and in groups) – producing, directing, shooting, and editing three diverse projects. The class is highly collaborative, student-centered, and results-driven.
